During the last few months, HB sophomores Olivia Tse and Dana Mietus have been recognized for their musical talent. Tse plays harp in the HB Orchestra, and she and Mietus play violin as well.
Tse recently won the Contemporary Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition on Harp. And she advanced as a top 9 finalist in the New Artist Division at the Young Artist's Harp Competition in Rabun Gap, Georgia. In the fall, she took third in the 2012 Edinboro Highland Games & Scottish Festival Harp Competition. She also was the recipient of the M. Glenn Grossman Memorial Chair for outstanding performance as a member of the CYO. She has been with the orchestra since she was 12 years old.
Mietus won first stand in the Northeast Ohio Regional Orchestra and in the prestigious All-State Orchestra. She plays in the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra as well, and she volunteers every Monday after school at the Rainey Institute of Music, helping the young students learn how to play strings using the "El Sistema" orchestral program from Venezuela. which was delveloped to help children find a better life through music. Isabel Trautwein from the Cleveland Orchestra brought this program to Cleveland last year and personally asked Mietus to mentor the youngest violinists. She says that it's been "an incredible, life-changing experience."
